7Cr13(GB) - Budget stainless steel, several knife companies started using it, including US and Chinese companies. That includes SOG, Browning, and countless and nameless Chinese knockoffs. For the record, those supposedly "Chris Reeve one piece knives" made out of 7Cr13 steel are also fakes. Chris Reeve uses better alloys.

I think that the Tomahawk by Kershaw may bear up under high-impact use, as the thick bit will likely be less brittle than an extremely high-carbon blade (1095). 1070 carbon steel seems like a better steel because it will likely hold an edge longer than the lower-carbon counterpart.

A common stainless steel that is very close to 440c in performance. D-2 With its high carbon and low Chromium this may be the closest you can get to carbon in a stainless steel. Knife makers love this steel. It is used by Benchmade and a ton of custom knife makers. If I had to use stainless, it would be this one. 7Cr17

Carbon steel is a popular choice for rough use knives. Carbon steel used to be much tougher, much more durable, and easier to sharpen than stainless steel. They lack the chromium content of stainless steel, making them susceptible to corrosion. Carbon steels have less carbon than typical stainless steels do, but it is the main alloy element.

The Lexicon of Blade Steel list common steels often used in knives. It is in no way all inclusive. All steels listed here also appear within the Lexicon of Knife Terminolgy. As I hear about other steels being used in knife making I will try to determine what they are and add them.
edge retention is only part of the equation. i prefer a softer, tougher steel than a harder steel personally, especially for hard use. I would rather an edge fold and be easy to resharpen in the field than chip and need hours to reprofile or repair. pick a steel based on what applications you plan on using the knife for. as a commercial fisherman i prefer a low maintenance steel that is less , x7cr13 steel

I was disappointed with their SHOT show offerings. Crappy steel and gimmicky designs/features. The combination makes the knife practically unusable. It's especially sad because Kershaw is sometimes your first entry into this knife collecting business and their mid range stuff is such a great place to start for the money.
