AISI 316 Grade Stainless Steel AISI 316 stainless steel is one of the most widely used austenitic stainless steels. Due to the addition of Molybdenum (Mo), it has a great improvement in corrosion resistance and high temperature strength. 316L stainless steel is the low carbon version of AISI 316.
316 is usually regarded as the standard marine grade stainless steel, but it is not resistant to warm sea water. In many marine environments 316 does exhibit surface corrosion, usually visible as brown staining.
Type 316 grade stainless steel is particularly effective in acidic environments. This grade of steel is effective in protecting against corrosion caused by sulfuric, hydrochloric, acetic, formic, and tartaric acids, as well as acid sulfates and alkaline chlorides.
316 grade is the second-most common form of stainless steel. It has almost the same physical and mechanical properties as 304 stainless steel, and contains a similar material make-up. The key difference is that 316 stainless steel incorporates about 2 to 3 percent molybdenum.
Grade 316 is an improved version of CS 304, with the addition of molybdenum and a slightly higher nickel content. The resultant composition of CS 316 gives the steel much increased corrosion resistance in many aggressive environments.
Alloy 316/316L is molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The higher nickel and molybdenum content in this grade allows it to demonstrate better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304, especially with regard to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments.

Similar to 304, Grade 316 stainless steel has high amounts of chromium and nickel. 316 also contains silicon, manganese, and carbon, with the majority of the composition being iron. A major difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel is the chemical composition, with 316 containing a significant amount of molybdenum; typically 2 to 3 percent by weight vs only trace amounts found in 304. The higher molybdenum content results in grade 316 possessing increased corrosion resistance.
As a result of that, grade 316 stainless steel naturally becomes more suitable for usage in conditions that do not favour the corrosion resistance of grade 304. Higher Corrosion and Heat Resistance

The second most common austenitic stainless steel is Type 316. The addition of 2% molybdenum provides greater resistance to acids and to localized corrosion caused by chloride ions. Low-carbon versions, for example 316L or 304L, are used to avoid corrosion problems caused by welding. The "L" means that the carbon content of the alloy is below 0.03%.

316 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless and heat-resisting steel with remarkable resistance to corrosion in comparison to other steels when exposed to the outdoor elements like sea water.
The L grade has a lower maximum carbon limit and the straight grade has increased mechanical properties. If material is certified as straight grade, the carbon content would have to be at a level of 0.030% maximum in order to be dual certified as 316L/316 grade. (presumably the mechanicals would have already been met).
